    How to drill basic strategy

    Set the rules first

Match the game you actually play. The defaults — four-to-eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed, late surrender available — cover most tables. If your casino hits soft 17 or has no surrender, flip those toggles; a few correct plays change, and the trainer grades you on the rules you set.

    Drill in chunks

Trying to learn every cell at once is how people end up half-remembering all of it. Use the focus control: hard totals until they are automatic, then soft totals, then pairs, then the surrender spots. The Toughest focus drills the exact hands players miss most — the 12s, soft 18, the stiff hands against a weak dealer.

    Read the misses

Every hand you get wrong lands in the missed log with the correct play and why. Those are your weak spots — the cells worth a few extra reps. Open the strategy chart any time to see the whole grid for your current rules; it is generated by the same engine that grades you, so it never disagrees with itself.

    Frequently asked questions

What players ask before they drill the chart.

    What is blackjack basic strategy?

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal way to play every blackjack hand based only on your cards and the dealer's upcard, derived from computer simulation of every possible situation. Playing it perfectly drops the house edge to roughly half a percent in a typical game — far lower than guessing — without any card counting.

Does basic strategy guarantee I win?

No. Basic strategy minimizes the house edge; it does not flip the game in your favor. You will still lose slightly more often than you win over time. What it does is squeeze the edge down to about half a percent, which is as good as the game gets before you add card counting on top.

Why does the correct play change with the rules?

Small rule differences shift the math. Whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, whether you can double after splitting, and whether late surrender is offered all change a handful of correct plays. That is why this trainer lets you set those rules — and why the strategy chart updates to match.

What do Ds and Rs mean on the chart?

Ds means double if you can, otherwise stand — it appears on hands like soft 18 against a weak dealer. Rs means surrender if it is offered, otherwise stand. The plain codes are H for hit, S for stand, D for double (otherwise hit), P for split, and R for surrender (otherwise hit).

Should I memorize the whole chart at once?

Work in chunks. Most players learn the hard totals first, then soft totals, then pair splitting, then the surrender exceptions. Use the Drill focus to isolate each group, get it near-perfect, then move on. The Toughest focus targets the specific cells people miss most.

Is this chart right for single-deck blackjack?

This trainer uses the standard four-to-eight deck chart, which covers the large majority of games — including almost all six- and eight-deck tables. Single-deck and double-deck games change a few plays; if you mainly play those, learn the multi-deck chart here first, then layer on the small exceptions.

How is this different from card counting?

Basic strategy is the foundation: the right play for every hand, ignoring what has already been dealt. Card counting sits on top, adjusting your bets and a few plays based on the cards remaining. Learn basic strategy cold first — counting without it is pointless. When you are ready, our card counting trainer is the next step.
