How the Basic Strategy Trainer works
The Basic Strategy Trainer is a free, in-browser tool that deals you real blackjack hands one at a time, asks how you would play each one, and grades you instantly. Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal play for every hand based only on your cards and the dealer's upcard — play it perfectly and the house edge drops to roughly half a percent, far lower than guessing, with no card counting involved. This tool is how you get it into muscle memory.
What makes it accurate is that the grading and the reference chart come from the same verified engine, and both respond to the table rules you set. Change whether the dealer hits soft 17, whether you can double after splitting, or whether surrender is offered, and a handful of correct plays shift — and the trainer and the chart shift with them, so they never disagree. Everything runs on your device; nothing is saved or sent.
How to use it, step by step
- Set the rules to match your game. Up top, set dealer on soft 17 (stands or hits), double after split, and late surrender. The defaults — stands on soft 17, double after split allowed, surrender available — cover most multi-deck tables. If your casino differs, flip the toggles; the correct answers adjust automatically.
- Pick a drill focus. Use Drill focus to isolate a group: hard totals, soft totals, pairs, the surrender spots, or Toughest — the exact cells players miss most. Drilling one group at a time beats trying to absorb the whole grid at once.
- Play the hand. You are dealt a dealer upcard and your hand. Pick your play from the buttons — only the legal plays for that hand are offered, so you will not be shown Split on a non-pair, for instance.
- Read the result. The trainer tells you instantly whether you were right and, if not, the correct play and the reason. Your streak, accuracy, hands played, and best streak update each time.
- Review your misses. Every hand you get wrong drops into the Hands you missed log with the correct play, so your weak cells are gathered in one place — those are the ones worth extra reps.
- Check the chart when you want the full picture. Tap Show strategy chart to open the complete grid for your current rules. Because it is generated by the same engine that grades you, it always matches the answers you are getting.

Does basic strategy guarantee I win?

Should I memorize the whole chart at once?
Work in chunks. Most players learn the hard totals first, then soft totals, then pair splitting, then the surrender exceptions. Use the Drill focus to isolate each group, get it near-perfect, then move on. The Toughest focus targets the specific cells people miss most.
Is this chart right for single-deck blackjack?
This trainer uses the standard four-to-eight deck chart, which covers the large majority of games — including almost all six- and eight-deck tables. Single-deck and double-deck games change a few plays; if you mainly play those, learn the multi-deck chart here first, then layer on the small exceptions.
How is this different from card counting?
Basic strategy is the foundation: the right play for every hand, ignoring what has already been dealt. Card counting sits on top, adjusting your bets and a few plays based on the cards remaining.
