How to get the most out of this trainer

1 · Lock in the running count

Start in Running Count mode with one or two decks and a comfortable speed. Your only job is to keep a running tally as each card lands. Check yourself often. When you can clear a full deck and land on the right number every time, speed up. A counter who is fast but wrong is worse than no counter at all.

2 · Add the true count

Switch to True Count mode and a six-deck shoe. Now you convert: running count divided by decks remaining, rounded down. That per-deck number is the one you actually bet and play off of — a +6 running count with three decks left is only a +2. KO and Red 7 skip this step; they run off a pivot instead.

3 · Train the deviations

Deviations mode quizzes the Illustrious 18 and Fab 4 — the playing and surrender decisions that change with the count. You will see a hand, the dealer upcard, and a true count, and pick the play. Learn the top six first; they carry most of the value. Insurance at +3 is the single most valuable one.

Frequently asked questions

What counters ask before they sit down to practice.

How does the card counting trainer work?

Pick a counting system and a drill. In Running Count mode the trainer deals cards one at a time at a speed you set; you keep the count in your head and check yourself whenever you like. In True Count mode you also convert the running count to a true count using the decks remaining. In Deviations mode you are shown a hand, the dealer upcard, and a true count, and you choose the correct play from the Illustrious 18 and Fab 4.

Which counting system should a beginner learn first?

Hi-Lo. It is balanced, level-one, and the most widely taught and documented system, which means almost every chart, index, and trainer assumes it. Master Hi-Lo before considering a level-two or level-three system like Omega II, Zen, or Wong Halves — their extra precision rarely outweighs the added mental load for most players.

Do KO and Red 7 use a true count?

No. KO and Red 7 are unbalanced systems built to be played off the running count against a fixed pivot, so there is no true-count conversion. That is why the True Count drill is only offered for balanced systems. For KO and Red 7, use the Running Count drill — and remember Red 7 counts red sevens as +1 and black sevens as 0, which this trainer deals accordingly.

Are the Illustrious 18 and Fab 4 indices the same for every system?

No. The index numbers are calculated for Hi-Lo specifically. Other systems have their own index values. The Deviations drill trains the Hi-Lo indices, which is what the large majority of counters use in practice.

What are the Illustrious 18 and the Fab 4?

The Illustrious 18 are the eighteen most valuable deviations from basic strategy, ranked by how much they add to your edge — starting with taking insurance at a true count of +3. The Fab 4 are the four most valuable late-surrender deviations. Together they capture most of the playing-decision value counting makes available. The full reference lives on our Illustrious 18 & Fab 4 chart.

Is counting cards illegal?

Counting in your head is not illegal anywhere in the United States — it is a mental skill, not a device. Casinos are private property, though, and can ask a suspected counter to stop playing blackjack or to leave. Using a phone or device to help you count at the table is a different matter and is illegal in most places.

How long until I can count for real?

Most people can count down a single deck accurately within a week or two of short daily sessions. Doing it at casino speed, while making basic-strategy plays, estimating decks, and converting to a true count, takes longer — usually a few months of consistent practice. This trainer is built to compress that: drill the pieces here until each one is automatic, then put them together.
