Equity

Your hand’s share of the pot based on its probability of winning if all remaining cards were dealt — 40% equity in a $100 pot means your fair share is $40 right now. Equity is the raw material of every decision: compare it to the price you are asked to pay (pot odds) and to what pressure adds (fold equity). It moves with every card, which is why draws bet and made hands protect.

At the table

A♠K♠ against Q♦Q♥ preflop is nearly a coin flip — about 46% equity for the big slick. The pair is “ahead,” but the money says it is almost even.

House note

Equity is the math version of hope — the only version that pays.
