Float

Calling a bet with a hand that has not connected, planning to take the pot on a later street when the aggressor gives up. Floats work best in position against players who c-bet often but surrender turns: your call buys the story that you have something, and their check hands you the pot. Overcards and backdoor draws make the best floating hands, because sometimes you simply get there.

At the table

You call a flop c-bet on Q♥8♦4♣ holding A♠5♠ — just overs and backdoors. The turn checks through to you, and your bet takes it right there.

House note

Floating is renting the pot with intent to squat.
