Poker Glossary

Freeroll

A tournament with no entry fee but a real prize pool — or, more broadly, any spot where you can win but cannot lose. Within a hand, a freeroll occurs when tied players see remaining cards that only one of them can use to improve. Free money always has a purpose, usually marketing — but it is still free.

At the table

Both players hold nine-eight on T♥7♥6♦ — identical straights — but yours is 9♥8♥. You split at worst and scoop if a heart lands: a pure freeroll.

House note

A freeroll is the game saying “first one’s free.” Take it — just remember why they said it.
