Poker Glossary

Gutshot

An inside straight draw: exactly four cards of one rank complete your straight, because the missing card sits in the middle of the sequence. Four outs hit about 8.5% on the next card and roughly 16.5% by the river. That is half of an open-ender’s equity, so a gutshot usually needs extra help — overcards, a pair, backdoor draws — or an excellent price to continue.

At the table

You hold 9♥8♥ on K♦7♣5♠ — only a six completes the straight. Four outs, about 16.5% to arrive by the river.

House note

Four outs, endless faith. The gutshot is proof that hope math and real math are different subjects.
