Poker Glossary

Polarized

A range built from the top and the bottom — very strong hands and bluffs — with the medium strength removed. Polarized ranges pair naturally with big bets: the size wins the maximum with the nuts while charging the most for the bluffs riding along. The opposite is a merged or condensed range of medium hands, which prefers smaller sizings.

At the table

A pot-sized river overbet announces: nuts or air. Your medium-strength hand cannot beat the value and cannot lose to the bluffs — the exact dilemma the sizing was built to create.

House note

Polarization: monsters and stories, nothing in between.
