Poker Glossary

Range

The complete set of hands a player could hold given every action they have taken — the real opponent in every decision, since exact cards are unknowable. Hand reading means starting wide preflop and narrowing street by street as bets, checks, and sizings eliminate holdings. Thinking in ranges instead of single hands is the dividing line between guessing and playing.

At the table

A tight player raises UTG, then bets big on A♦K♥7♠. Their range is ace-and-king heavy — and your J♠J♦, a monster preflop, has quietly become a bluff-catcher.

House note

Beginners see two cards. Pros see a weighted list with a mortgage.
