Poker Glossary

Set

Three of a kind made with a pocket pair plus one matching board card. Sets are concealed — the board looks harmless while you hold a monster — which is why they win big pots and cause most set-over-set coolers. A pocket pair flops a set about 12% of the time (roughly 7.5-to-1 against), and that occasional jackpot is the entire logic of set-mining small pairs preflop.

At the table

You call preflop with 5♣5♦; the flop comes A♠K♥5♠. Every big ace at the table just connected — and none of them can see what hit you.

House note

Sets are why pocket pairs call preflop: 7.5-to-1 against, priceless when it lands.
