Trips

Three of a kind made with one hole card plus a pair on the board. Unlike a set, trips are loud — everyone sees the paired board — so they get paid less, and kicker battles are real because two players can share the same three of a kind. The visible pair also opens full-house possibilities, which demands respect on later streets.

At the table

You hold A♣9♦ on 9♠9♥4♣ — trips with the best kicker. An opponent with K-9 holds the same trips and is drawing to exactly three kings.

House note

Trips announce themselves; sets whisper. Guess which one gets paid.
