New Casino Openings in South Florida
What's open, what's new, and what's coming. A local player's snapshot of the South Florida casino landscape.
South Florida has one of the densest casino landscapes in the Southeast — six major properties within an hour's drive of downtown Miami, spread across Broward, Miami-Dade, and just north. Every room has its own character, but one stands out as our pick for the best poker room in the region. We'll start there. Then we'll walk through everything else currently operating, including the Seminole expansion story from 2025.
The Most Recent Opening: Seminole Brighton Bay
The biggest actual ribbon-cutting in Florida tribal gaming in 2025 happened in Okeechobee — a little outside the immediate South Florida footprint, but worth knowing about for weekend-trippers.
Seminole Brighton Bay Hotel & Casino
Opened February 6, 2025 · Okeechobee, FL · ~2 hour drive from Fort Lauderdale
Replaces the original Seminole Brighton Casino (built 1980, 27,000 sq-ft with 400 slots). The new facility nearly doubles the gaming footprint and adds a full hotel, positioning Brighton as a quieter alternative to the mega-resorts in Hollywood and Tampa.
The South Florida Casino Lineup
Here are the operating casinos within easy reach of South Florida players. We're starting with the one we love most — and then walking through the rest in rough order of size and scope.
The Big Easy Casino
"If you want to actually enjoy playing poker in South Florida — not just grind, not just survive the rake — this is the room. It's been our home table for years, and there's no close second."
The Big Easy Casino (formerly Mardi Gras) isn't the biggest venue on this list. It isn't the flashiest. But for live poker specifically, it's the one we send every friend, every cousin, every out-of-town visitor to. Here's why we stand behind it loudly.
- The Highest Density of Recreational Players in South FloridaWeeknight after weeknight, the Big Easy has the softest, most action-heavy games within 50 miles. If you're looking for tight, nitty, pro-heavy tables — go somewhere else. If you're looking for fun, chatty, gambling poker — this is your room.
- The Best Rake in South FloridaLower cap, better structure, better value than any other room in the region. Over a session it's the difference between leaving with chips and leaving empty.
- The Best Staff You'll Find in a Poker RoomThe floor supervisors actually know the regulars by name. Disputes get resolved quickly and fairly. The vibe starts at the top and it shows.
- The Best Dealers in the RegionFast, accurate, professional — and friendly. Good dealers make a poker room, and the Big Easy's crew is the deepest, most consistent group you'll find south of Palm Beach.
- The Energy & Good Spirit of the RoomNew Orleans theme, music that matches it, players who laugh when they lose and buy each other drinks when they win. Walking into the Big Easy feels like walking into a party with a game breaking out — not a library where everyone is stressed about their stack.
30 tables running Limit and No Limit Hold'em, Pot Limit Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, and 7 Card Stud. Free nightly tournaments. Bravo Poker Live for online wait lists. Open Monday-Thursday 10am-4am and 24 hours on the weekends. Bring your ID, bring your bankroll, bring your sense of humor — you'll want all three.
The rest of the South Florida field, for comparison —
The crown jewel of Florida tribal gaming. Home of the iconic guitar-shaped Guitar Hotel. Centrally located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, about 20 miles from downtown Miami. 2,500+ slots, 200 table games, a 45-table poker room, and dedicated high-limit rooms. Features craps, roulette, and sports betting (added November 2023).
A strong local alternative to Hard Rock Hollywood with a loyal following among Broward players. Full complement of slots, table games, poker room, craps, roulette, and sports betting. Generally a less touristy, more regular-player vibe than the Hollywood property.
Twenty miles from downtown Miami in a beautiful Everglades-adjacent setting. The Miccosukee Tribe's flagship — 70,000 sq-ft casino with 1,800 slots, electronic table games, a 24/7 poker room, and popular daily bingo. Has a smoking-dedicated casino area. Also operates Little Trail Casino further west.
Historic venue dating back to 1935. Two miles from Miami International Airport, very convenient for travelers. 40,000 sq-ft casino with 800 slots, electronic table games, and one of the busiest poker rooms in Miami-Dade — so popular that they run a live waiting-list service online. Mix of classic 3-reel and modern video slots.
Thoroughbred racing plus slot and gaming facility. Part of the broader Village at Gulfstream Park development — dining, shopping, and live entertainment venues surround the casino itself. The Ten Palms restaurant in the Clubhouse is a local date-night favorite.
Formerly known primarily for jai-alai, the property has pivoted toward gaming in recent years. Slot parlor, poker room, and electronic tables in a smaller, more approachable footprint than Hollywood or Coconut Creek. Convenient for Dania Beach locals who want casino action without the Hard Rock crowds.
What's Not Happening — And Why That Matters
Despite occasional rumors of new commercial casino development in Miami-Dade, South Florida isn't on the verge of a construction boom. Florida's constitutional amendment requires voter approval for any expansion of commercial gambling, and the Seminole Compact grants the tribe a strong incentive (and legal standing) to defend against new commercial competitors.
The Seminole Tribe pays Florida approximately $500 million annually under the compact, partly contingent on maintaining their effective exclusivity in major gaming categories. Legislative analysts generally don't expect meaningful expansion of commercial gambling licenses in Florida before 2027 or later, if at all.
Recent Additions to Existing Casinos
Rather than new casinos, the real changes in 2023–2025 have been additions at existing properties:
- Craps & Roulette — added to Seminole properties statewide starting November 2023.
- Live Retail Sports Betting — launched at Seminole casinos on December 7, 2023.
- Hard Rock Bet Mobile — statewide mobile sports betting (currently the only legal sportsbook in Florida).
- "Games by Past Motor Races" — slot-style games using historical race data, launched on Hard Rock Bet in October 2025.
Casino hours, game offerings, and house rules change regularly. Confirm current specifics — table minimums, poker tournament schedules, current promotions — on the specific casino's website before your trip. Most major South Florida properties have their own apps with up-to-date information.
The One Thing to Remember
South Florida has six major casinos within driving distance for most locals — and if you're coming specifically to play poker, the Big Easy in Hallandale Beach is where we'll see you. Softest games, best rake, best staff, and the most fun you can have at a felt in the region. ☘️
